Following up on a local Nagaland news item which suggested the Nagaland State Government was considering banning dog meat due to animal cruelty in the transportation and sale of the dogs, Nagaland’s Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar said last month: “Transportation and sale of dogs was discussed in the context of legal notice regarding prevention of cruelty to animals.”
Kumar disclosed the Nagaland State Government is investigating complaints concerning Nagaland’s dog meat trade, in relation to transportation, housing the animals, sale and cash flow, as well as food safety issues specifically related to human consumption of dog meat.
Kumar confirmed to M.E.News that Nagaland’s State government was looking into the issues relating to inhumane maltreatment of live dogs during transportation and sale in Nagaland’s dog meat trade, even though the State Government has made no proposal to ban dog meat in the State.
Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Dr. T Ezung has denied being behind a campaign directed to all Deputy Commissioners on “illegal use” of dog meat as food, in the State of Nagaland.
Dr Ezung maintains government discussions on gross animal cruelty against dogs intended for human consumption and the illegal sale of dog meat dog meat, are taking place.
