New Zealand: Cat Fur Cat Handbag

A ladies handbag titled “glamor puss” is causing outrage among New Zealand’s animal lovers, because the bag is made from a real cat, with it’s head and eyes and a beaded clasp. The handbag is listed for auction sale on NZ auction site Trade Me, at a starting price of US$1030 as a one-off item, by Christchurch taxidermist Claire Hobbs.

Hobbs says her purse creation expresses her artistic passions and desire to engineer the surreal, particularly using feral and domestic felines. It is unclear how the cat lost its life, and Hobbs is adamant the cat was not killed to make the bag.

The bag is listed for auction sale under cat art, taxidermy, fashion, cat walk, catatonic, cool, purrrrfect. Hobbs says her art is not disrespectful to the animals she uses, saying: “To spend all that time on tanning and sculpture and making it brand new shows the utmost respect.”

Hans Kriek, director of Save Animals From Exploitation, said although taxidermy was legal, “is turning a cat into a handbag any worse than turning an elephant’s foot into an umbrella stand?” Read the news article: here.

China has been manufacturing dog skin handbags for years and selling them in Yunnan province, among other places. A dog skin handbag, with the matching dog’s head, complete with terrified look on it’s face, is one of the items you can buy in China as a spin-off from China’s dog and meat trade.

Smaller clutch-purses are available using dogs such as Teacup Poodles with the tiny Teacup Poodle’s Head as the opening clasp. Some of the tiny poodles still have their pompom on the top of their head, as an extra decoration.

Fight Dog Meat also monitors the fur trade, which is intertwined with the global dog and cat meat trade.

Absolutely disgusting to see that ‘haunting surreal’ look from the cat’s eyes! That artist should be ashamed of herself. When animals, humans etc perish they should be cremated, buried not preserved for a freaky, ugly trend……shocking!!!

This is not an art, it’s madness! Only a person with no empathy can do such terrible things!

This is the disgusting thing about ignorant “designers” they create trends and must have items.
They are the cause of SO much misery for animals used for fur and think nothing of it. ALL of them should be sent to where these animals are reared and processed then some of them might just give a shit.

She might actually be telling the truth, the cat may have been dead when she found it and got the bright idea to make a handbag out of it.There are people who will think it’s pretty cool. So here is the problem as I see it: it sets the precedent for others to make cat bags and I doubt a company would send their employees out in search of dead cats. They would buy live cats cheap and kill them as cheaply as possible, like they do in Asia. Personally, I think it’s pretty creepy to run around with a dead cat by your side. Poor kitty
