This is one of the most heartwarming stories this year. Around 100 children and their parents stood in solidarity to call for an end to the dog and cat meat trade, and rhino horn trade in Vietnam. Most of the children were under 15 years old, and for four hours they sang, danced and chanted slogans, calling for an end to the dog and cat meat trade in Vietnam.
The event was organized by the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam and they gathered at Hoan Kien Lake in Hanoi. Their main slogan was: “Stop eating dog meat and the mistreatment of animals.”
A very popular message was: “Rhino horns equal (finger)nails. They cannot cure.” For the last six years Vietnam has been listed as the world’s biggest hub for illegal rhino trafficking.
It didn’t take long before tourists got involved, and many local passers-by stopped to admire the young children and commend them for speaking out on such important subjects, which included saving the planet.
Each person involved wore a bright green vest with a message pinned to their back, such as: “Please stop eating dog meat – Dogs are man’s best friend.”
The children also staged a pop-up art exhibition, where they drew their own interpretation of how they see the dog and cat meat trade, and rhino horn trade. The event was a wonderful opportunity for grandparents to be involved and encourage their grandchildren to express themself, as they wish they had been able to do about these subjects, when they were young.
Tue Dong, the organizer and representative of the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam, said to VN Express: “Our events vary every week. We strive to raise awareness about the environment, nature, animals, traffic, and so on; topics that are often neglected in society nowadays.” Their last event was on the effects of litter.
It is estimated that over five million dogs are slaughtered in Vietnam each year for human consumption, and millions of cats. On ratio per population, Vietnam has the highest dog and cat meat trade in the world [China is estimated to slaughter 10 million dogs each year, with a much greater population than Vietnam.]
Fight Dog Meat commends these beautiful children and thanks their parents and grandparents for teaching their children to show compassion to animals and directing them to ways make the world a kinder place for animals and people alike.
