Nigeria: Africa’s Largest Dog Meat Trade

Many Nigerian dog eaters falsely believe eating dog meat will bring them supernatural powers, protect them from fatal diseases and cure illnesses. Nigeria has a population of 192 Million people and dog meat is cleverly marketed as a cure for malaria and a repellent against witches and wizards.

It is falsely believed that witches are too scared to attack dog eaters because eating dog meat neutralizes the witches power, partly due to the dog’s penetrating eyes. However, for this (false) belief to be fail-safe, dog meat must be eaten at least three times a week!

In Calabar, Nigeria, live dogs are bought and sold at the Danwaki dog meat market. Many dogs are traded for palm oil, also known as “red gold.” There are many dog meat eateries in Calabar where dog meat sells as fast as its cooked, and is washed down with hot local beer.

Each July a three day festival is held in Nigeria, celebrating Ogun, the God Of Iron. Live dog sacrifices are made to Ogun, where two live dogs are torn in half, from limb to limb. Othere animals are also sacrificed to Ogun as well. The highlight of the dogs being torn asunder is when each live dog’s head is ripped off and its body flung through the air as bystanders are covered in blood splatter. Spectators scream with delight. To help Vietnamese animals, please help this Vietnamese vet get the extra training she cannot receive in Vietnam. A small $2 will help her achieve this goal. With extra training she can teach fellow Vietnamese vets better ways to treat dogs and cats, which is not taught in Vietnamese vet schools: https://www.mycause.com.au/page/151374/help-fund-my-dream-vet-internship

This is beyond barbaric. Not even the cave men behaved like a this. Dogs are highly intelligent animals – they would give their life to protect their human. Disgusting. No words strong enough
