Vietnam: Rescued From A Dog Meat Smokehouse

This dog was chained up at a Vietnamese “smokehouse,” which usually means an eatery where dogs are slaughtered on the spot. In many dog meat eateries diners eat plates of dog meat as live dogs are slaughtered in the same premises. The dog was chained up, waiting to be “put into the hole,” said his rescuer.

The “hole” usually refers to a very small dark dungeon type holding area, often sunken into the floor and secured with an iron gate. The ‘hole’ is where live dog meat dogs are kept for slaughter. There is no food or water and dogs are often kept in darkness. Escape is impossible.

Restaurant owners tie the dog’s mouth tightly shut to keep the dogs quiet and stop them screaming out in agony or terror.

A few years ago I interviewed a Vietnamese dog butcher who lived out of Saigon, and owned his own dog meat eatery. He prided himself on slaughtering live dogs without interrupting his customers as they ate plates of dog meat in the next room.

This photo was taken in the Smokehouse, before he was rescued. He was the only dog left alive.

With the dog’s mouth tightly bound shut, he cannot pant to cool his core temperature down. He is filled with panic, surrounded by the stench of death, cannot breath clearly, or pant to cool himself. His snout is already distended so his mouth has been bound shut for some time.

Thank you to the young Vietnamese man who rescued this stricken dog from certain death. You saved this dog’s life. It is wonderful to see Vietnamese animal lovers rescuing animals in need and speaking up on their behalf. Thank you to all who are doing this!  is very heartwarming.

To help Vietnamese animals, please help this Vietnamese vet get the extra training she cannot receive in Vietnam. A small $2 will help her achieve this goal. With extra training she can teach fellow Vietnamese vets better ways to treat dogs and cats, which is not taught in Vietnamese vet schools: https://www.mycause.com.au/page/151374/help-fund-my-dream-vet-internship
