An illegal dog trafficking ring has been exposed by local animal lovers in Tripura. The dogs were bound and hogtied with nylon ropes and crammed into hessian sacks with just their heads sticking out. The dogs were bound so tightly the nylon ropes cut through their flesh. Traffickers heavily drugged each dog to shut them up from barking or howling in fear or pain. Without rescue the dogs would have stayed hogtied and bound in the filthy sacks with no food or water for days, until slaughter.
All five dogs were rescued, thank you to Agatala animal rescue and the fast response from Kumarghat Police and local vet medical teams. One dog was critically ill and still recovering. The dogs were given emergency veterinary treatment at the scene, in front of the Kumarghat Police Station as local animal lovers gathered to soothe the stricken dogs and comfort them.
Tripura is the third smallest state in India. For dog lovers its a nightmare! Tripura is surrounded by four dog meat eating States: Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. Tripura has many dog lovers who are in constant fear for the safety of their pet dogs because of aggressive dog thieves.
India has a well documented problem with many stray dogs. Tripura animal lovers take good care of their street dog population. Local Agartala animal rescue organization sterilizes dogs to prevent breeding, plus fully vaccinates and collars them, as a visible sign the dogs are being cared for.
A few months ago in the space of one month, hundreds of Tripura’s loved street dogs disappeared! Residents knew it was dog traffickers but were unable to catch them. Working together with Tripura police, Agartala rescue members made it their mission to catch out dog traffickers in their State.

Forcing the dog traffickers to abandon the dogs en route is a starting point. Animal rescuers are now working hard to stamp out dog traffickers from their State. It is a difficult and uphill battle which will not end in a hurry or without a lot of hard work.
On a happy note, two of the five dog meat dogs have already been adopted into happy families. The remaining three remain in care and will be adopted in time.
