Egypt: Exporting Live Dogs and Cats For Meat

Egypt is poised to become a dog and cat meat country after the Minister for Egyptian Agriculture publicly confirmed companies have permission to supply over 4,500+ live dogs and cats (from the streets) for export abroad. Spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture said: “For the first time (homeless) cats and dogs are exported abroad and there is nothing to prevent it.” There are no animal protection laws in Egypt and local animal rescue teams across Egypt are reeling in horror.

Can you begin to imagine the horrific conditions of their live export in searing heat that these animals will have to endure before arriving at final slaughterhouse destinations? Look at live sheep export and live cattle export into Egypt, filled with horror stories of brutal cruelty. Expect the same for live dogs and cats being exported out of Egypt, to butchers in dog and cat meat countries., pet centric, Fight Dog Meat, fightdogmeat

Translated by animal rescuers in Egypt, the following is a translation of the interview taking place in the two television show videos below. Official spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Hamed Abdel Dayem, is on the phone being interviewed by the television presenter:

Q. Where is this batch going to?
A. Usually the exporter does not indicate to which country is his batch going to. However, we can know from the airport at time of export.

Q. Is this the first time?
A. I believe so. Because no exporter has requested this before.
There is no law or international agreement that forbids the export of dogs and cats.
What we do is vaccinate the dogs and cats and do all necessary tests to ensure that they are do not have Rabies.

Q. Where do they get these cats and dogs from?
A. These are the Baladi ones.
Q. So where does he get them from?
A. He could be a professional, he could be collecting them…
Q. El Masry El Yom states there will be 2400 cats and around 2000 dogs.
A. Yes. These are the approved quantities.

Q. Do you set any prerequisites from the exporter?
A. That he’s a registered exporter and that he follows the required veterinary requirements. To guarantee that these animals do not have Rabies.

Q. Very good. And as you said, there is no law that forbids such an export.
A. Of course not. There is no law against it. We would not do anything against an international law.

The following video was taken a few days ago at Stanley Bridge in Alexandria, Egypt. Homeless dogs which had been surviving on this unused land were found slaughtered and partially burnt. There were still embers of coals burning. The bodies of the dogs were twisted and contorted, leading rescuers to believe they were tortured to death. With no animal protection laws in place the people who did this answer to no one.

The situation in Egypt is still unfolding. Fight Dog Meat will continue to monitor the situation and bring updates as new information is made available through Egyptian animal rescuers.

I really cannot comprehend how anybody could eat cat and dog meat. These animals are domesticated pets they arent bred for food and they arent even killed in a humane way. I absolutely abhor animal cruelty and appeal to these countries to rethink this practice. Karma will get you and I wish you a very painful death if you are perpetrators of this henous cruelty.

Please do not do this. Societies are judged by how they treat their most vulnerable and animals and this truly puts Egypt in the uncivilised society. The rest of the world is appalled at the dog meat trade and cruelty to animals. Please stop this practice and protect animals.

You will find by going down this road you will turn many people off coming to Egypt and I am one of those people who willl never visit and never encourage anyone I know to visit Egypt as long as this is your policy.

Cats were treated as gods by the Egyptians now they are going to send them to be eaten.
You will turn people off coming to Egypt I will never visit and if you do this I will encourage anyone and everyone not to as well if you go ahead.

Shame on you to allow this to happen.
The killing methods used in the dog meat trade are barbaric and i just cannot imagine the travelling conditions -no animal should be treated like this. Please rethink
