China: Hangzhou Denies Dog Eradication.

Hangzhou officials vehemently deny any dog beatings or dog cull, despite countless video and photographic evidence. The first video shows a large gathering of local Hangzhou pet owners outside the Mayor’s office. Pet owners were standing up against the brutal rounding up and killing of dogs on their streets. They also expressed grave concern for the new law prohibiting mixed-breed dogs being issued registration. Any unregistered dog has a death sentence over it’s head. The new law enables foreign pure-bred pedigree dogs to be registered but excludes all local Chinese dogs of mixed origin.

Translated from a Chinese animal lover in Hangzhou who phoned Hangzhou government on the first day of the cull.

A number of local pet owners are low income earners and have mixed breed dogs which they love as family members. They cannot afford expensive pedigree dogs. The new law places their loved pets in extreme danger of being confiscated and killed when their current registration expires. The Mayor addressed the growing crowd as police gathered in a show of force as a silent warning to the distressed Hangzhou pet owners.

O day one of the cull a curfew was brought into effect prohibiting any dog on Hangzhou streets from 7am to 7pm. No exceptions! Dogs on the street were seized and many were bludgeoned to death on the spot. Some were forcibly drowned in lakes and canals. It remains imperative for all dogs to have current registration and vaccinations and be leashed at all times, after the curfew between 7pm and 7am. Dogs unleashed, unregistered or not vaccinated can be seized on the spot.

The municipal government of Hangzhou is already doing their best to accommodate the needs of foreign residents so as to satisfy the Western animal lovers like your website or those with enough money and connections to complain internationally, i.e. by allowing expensive foreign dogs. China is a totalitarian dictatorship with zero tolerance for any form of dissent. It is not safe for ordinary Chinese citizens to push further for animal rights because that would put their lives in danger. It is a totally different world in a parallel universe. Human beings in China have fewer rights than pets in the West – don’t forget that. Do you know that the Chinese government has been rounding up Muslim Uyghurs and putting them in concentration camps in the past few months?
