China: Shanghai Police Drown Dogs

Shanghai police seized a number of live dogs, drove them to a local river and drowned them in dog-catching nets. An unknown number of the seized dogs were residents loved pets; some were strays. Fengxian Police officers justified their response siting a call from a resident who said he’d been bitten by a dog in the area. He had no wounds and did not require medical help. These actions are in violation of the Regulations for Shanghai Dog Management.

A large number of people in China have an irrational fear of dogs. A happy dog can be seen by them as aggressive. A cheerful dog brushing against them for a pat can be seen as terrifying aggressive behavior. People like this are quick to call police for help and accuse dogs of attacking them, knowing the dogs will be seized and killed.

Many people with this attitude have been raised by parents who instilled the fear into their children. Now as adults they’re irrationally scared of dogs. This is an ongoing problem for dog owners in China. Many are forced to only walk their dog at night, heavily leashed and sometimes with a muzzle, to avoid false accusations against their dog.

World Dog Show 2019, Shanghai

The World Dog Show 2019 is about to commence in Shanghai. The same city where police officers drowned residents pet dogs following a disgruntled call from someone who doesn’t like dogs. The World Dog Show runs from April 30 to May 3rd. Show organizers describe the event as: “A joyful gathering for dog lovers and lovely dogs across the world.” Non attractive dog meat dogs need not apply!

World Dog Show 2019, being held in Shanghai, China.

When a “lovely” dog is captured by a dog trader it becomes a dog meat dog. They’re flung through the air by brutal men using iron neck calipers and crammed into iron cages. Food and water is withheld for up to five days, so there’s less body waste at slaughter. They’re packed so tightly they cannot stretch their legs or stand up, usually for days. Many dogs suffer broken limbs when the loaded cages are stacked on top of each other, or thrown off the trucks when unloaded.

As claustrophobic panic sets in, dominant dogs bite surrounding dogs in a demand for space. Less dominant dogs have no where to go. Dogs are ripped and torn, leaving them easy targets for disease. There’s no guarantee that even the strongest dogs will survive. With no food, no water and exposed to blistering heat or snow and sleet, its a miracle any dogs can survive. Many “lovely” purebred pedigree dogs and cats end up being sold for meat, for slaughter.

International dog show judges accuse organizations such as Fight Dog Meat of ‘making a mountain out of a molehill‘ for exposing animal cruelty in China.

Chinese animal lovers want the world to know what is happening to animals inside China. They’re desperate for animal protection laws but their cries fall on deaf ears of their government. Fight Dog Meat is exposing events taking place to help strengthen the voice of animal lovers in China. We’re showing the reality of the dog and cat meat trade which continues to operate while no animal protection laws are in place. Butchers answer to no one. This applies to all dog and cat meat countries; not just China.

Keeping quiet about things does not stop anything! Worldwide outrage is necessary for governments to take notice. We are pressuring governments by being a voice for these animals. Ultimately it is animal lovers living in these countries whom their own government will be forced to listen to, to enact positive change.

Do you think the World Dog Show should be held in China?

Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from China and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing, for their loved animals of all species!
