China: The World Dog Show 2019
The World Dog Show 2019 is underway in Shanghai, China. Show organizers describe it as a “joyful gathering for lovely dogs.” They shamelessly touted the event as a “great occasion to proceed with promotion of companion animal culture to make the public feel the cute of dogs.” So far we haven’t seen anything from the show calling for animal protection laws or an end to the brutal dog and cat meat trade.
As obsessively groomed dogs prance in a circle in the judging arena and audience members gasp in excitement and awe, dogs across China lay trussed and hog tied on slaughterhouse floors. Their mouth tied tightly shut and their legs trussed tightly together. Sometimes they’re trussed and tied into plastic sacks. They’re forced to watch their cage mates be slaughtered, one by one, knowing their turn is coming. With their mouth bound shut they’re unable to scream out in pain.
Every time a dog butcher reaches for them they faintly wag their tail. They know the human should show them kindness and not brutality. Every time a handler at a dog show reaches for the dog, it too faintly wags it’s tail just like a dog meat dog. A dog is a dog. There is no difference between the dog in the main area and the dog laying covered in it’s own blood on the slaughterhouse floor.
2,700+ “lovely” pedigree dogs in a shelter in China.
A shelter in northern China which Fight Dog Meat has helped for years, is run by a Chinese lady named Bohe. She has 2,700+ “lovely” purebred pedigree dogs. All her dogs are rescued from dog slaughterhouses and dog butchers after breeders sell their unwanted or unsold ‘stock’ for dog meat. The exact same breeds of dogs people are fawning over at the World Dog Show are inside Bohe’s shelter!

International dog show judges.
Every international judge at the World Dog Show should hang their head in shame. They live in countries with animal protection laws. By attending the show they’re supporting China’s refusal to implement animal protection laws. The four day World Dog Show in Shanghai has set our work back even further because of the acceptance from so many international judges who ‘choose’ to turn a blind eye to the suffering of animals in China. There is no humane way to slaughter dogs or cats for human consumption. For a list of the international judges participating, click here.
We thank The Kennel Club in Britain for not participating in the event. They declined to take part due to the brutal methods used in slaughtering dogs for human consumption. “The Kennel Club will not be attending the show with its roadshow stand,” it said in a statement on its website.
Fight Dog Meat salutes individual exhibitors who took a personal stand not to participate, on ethical grounds against the brutal treatment of animals across China. For some individuals their stand has come at great personal cost for them. They took a stand for dogs, as dog lovers and said NO. They refused to participate in the charade that cruelty doesn’t matter in a country with no animal protection laws. Thank you for your courage to take that stand.
Dog meat eating festival follows the World Dog Show.
Seven weeks from now China will celebrate the summer solstice on June 21. Its the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere; shortest day in the southern hemisphere. This day has become famous because of the Yulin dog meat festival, held in the town of Yulin in Guangxi province. Thousands of dogs are trucked in, brutally slaughtered and eaten in a dog meat and lychees celebration. Every year it receives worldwide condemnation. Its ironic that the World Dog Show in China is held just before it’s annual dog meat festival.

Chinese animal lovers want the world to know what is happening to animals inside China. They’re desperate for animal protection laws but their cries fall on deaf ears of their government. Fight Dog Meat is exposing events taking place to help strengthen the voice of animal lovers in China. We’re showing the reality of the dog and cat meat trade which continues to operate while no animal protection laws are in place. Butchers answer to no one. This applies to all dog and cat meat countries; not just China.
Keeping quiet about things does not stop anything! Worldwide outrage is necessary for governments to take notice. We are pressuring governments by being a voice for these animals. Ultimately it is animal lovers living in these countries whom their own government will be forced to listen to, to enact positive change.
Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from China and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing, for their loved animals of all species!
