Vietnam: Dog Thief Caught By Residents
Caught red handed by residents this morning, this dog thief had several dog carcasses in his possession which belonged to some of the people who caught him. Enraged residents from the village of Kong Htok commune, Chu Se village, overtook the thief and beat him mercilessly. Some of the residents were owners of the stolen dogs.
Vietnamese social media was quickly flooded with comments demanding the captured dog thief have his arms and legs broken so he could never steal again.
A number of people who commented had had their own loved pet dogs stolen in the past. One man said he’d had his dog for years. He loved his dog and his dog loved him, and they did everything together. Then one day a dog thief stole him and everything was over. This grieving pet owner wanted the beating to match the pain which had been inflicted upon him and his dog.
Another pet owner commenting said their loved pet was stolen during the night last night. She said she let her dog out to use the bathroom and as she waited for it, she heard a yelp! She ran out into the night to see dog thieves taking off with her loved dog. Today she’s going from slaughterhouse to slaughterhouse to try and find him. In reality there is very little hope of ever seeing him again.
Vietnam doesn’t have animal protection laws but it has a strong sense of vigilante justice. Police know captured dog thieves are beaten to an inch of their life by local residents when caught, so they don’t rush to the scene. Even though dog thieves know they run a serious risk of being caught by residents, they still risk their lives by stealing people’s dogs for quick cash from dog butchers and dog traders. Many dog thieves are drug addicts who simply do not care how much pain they inflict on the grieving families left behind.
Many local people commenting wished for the dog thief to be reunited with the dogs he’d just killed (in other words, send him to the ‘next life’ too.)
Vietnamese animal lovers want the world to know what is happening to animals inside Vietnam. They’re desperate for animal protection laws but their cries fall on deaf ears of their government. Fight Dog Meat is exposing events taking place to help strengthen the voice of animal lovers in Vietnam.
Worldwide outrage is necessary for governments to take notice. We are pressuring governments by being a voice for these animals. Ultimately it is animal lovers living in these countries whom their own government will be forced to listen to, to enact positive change.
Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from Vietnam and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing.
