Yesterday Bengbu City management in Anhui Province culled every stray dog they could see. Eight men marauded through the city streets flushing out unleashed dogs and bludgeoning them with iron bars and hammers. Some of the men each carried a pole across their shoulder with dead dogs swinging off the poles, as the men strutted through the neighborhood. Elderly residents and children watched in horror as the killing continued. Screams and howls rang through the streets as local animal lovers wept helplessly.
Anhui Province has a well known dog market where dogs are bought and sold for dog meat. Local residents in Bengbu City are asking who are these men? Were the men employed by city management? Or were they dog traders taking advantage of the COVID-19 epidemic, pretending to be from government departments?
The cruel spectacle of culling dogs caused social panic and distress for many residents in Bengbu City. The World Health Organization have confirmed dogs and cats do ‘not’ get COVID-19 and do ‘not’ spread COVID-19. The virus is spread from already infected humans, to other humans. Not animals.

Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from dog and cat meat countries and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing despite no animal protection laws. Turning away or sitting quietly does not end the trade. We’ll keep exposing what is taking place to these animals. We’re helping local volunteers have a louder voice on a world platform. Ultimately it’s the voice of the country’s own people whom their government will eventually be forced to listen to, for positive change for animals.
