April 5 – Remember Cambodia

This is an online event which will include FaceBook, Twitter and Instagram. More details of the event will be announced soon. I wrote the FDM flyer “Love Animals” specifically for Cambodian and Vietnamese supporters, who are restricted in what can be said in their country.
Why We Need To Remember Cambodia:
Last year I organized and hosted the successful Global March on April 4th, but in Cambodia it was held the next day, Sunday April 5th. Around 50 people took part, mainly mothers and little children, and many pet dogs on leashes for the “peaceful walk.” Police arrived in riot gear with guns drawn. When an officer threatened to kick a little girl’s dog to death, she began screaming in terror, and as her brave mother pleaded for the dog’s life. Terrified children and mothers began crying and weeping as the mothers begged for mercy. Two ‘official’ trucks arrived – one to take the pet dogs away to a dog slaughterhouse and one to take the people to jail, including the weeping and terrified little children. After serious negotiation from some of the mothers with officials, at gun point the animal lovers were herded into the gutter of a busy road and made to walk down the center of the road with heavy traffic weaving in and out around them. It was a horrific experience which left all my Cambodian friends heavily shaken and traumatized. The incident made international news and was covered by mainstream press. Cambodian officials justified their actions saying that “dogs on leashes is strange” and that dog meat is good and helps keep the streets clean.
Having made headlines across Cambodia that night and the front page of newspapers the following morning, the little group of brave dog lovers were heralded as heroes who stood up to the Khmer Rouge on behalf of dogs!
