Eating a dog’s head and consuming dog blood is some of the most dangerous parts of eating dog meat. Dogs are not inspected prior to or after slaughter. Many of the dogs have internal parasites (worms), and other serious diseases. Parasites are transmittable to humans.

Eating a dog’s head leaves the person vulnerable to rabies, which can harbor in the dog’s brain. Rabies can sit completely undetectable in dogs for up to seven months. The presence of rabies is undetectable in humans for up to seven years. When rabies surfaces it strikes quickly and deadly. By the time you’re diagnosed as having rabies it’s almost always too late to save the person’s life. Death by rabies is horrific.

Vietnam’s dog meat trade is disgustingly unhygienic. Dogs are slaughtered in appalling conditions and butchered in filth. The dog and cat meat trade is a blight on Vietnam’s community. It forces local animal lovers to live in fear of their loved pet being stolen and sold for meat. Dog butchers have zero regard for people in the community. Dog thieves are some of the most hated people in the country.

With tourism opening back up across Vietnam foreign visitors need to think carefully about what they order to eat. Some international tourists think its funny to eat dog meat. They use the pathetic mantra “when in Rome” to justify participating in blatant animal cruelty. Some even have pet dogs waiting for them back home.

If you wouldn’t do it at home then don’t do it when you travel.

Eating dog and cat meat induces many illnesses throughout the community, affecting upstanding members of society who have no part of this trade whatsoever. Vietnam’s dog and cat meat trade is brutally cruel. Vietnam needs animal protection laws!

Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from dog and cat meat countries and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing despite no animal protection laws. Turning away or sitting quietly does not end the trade. We’ll keep exposing what is taking place to these animals. We’re helping local volunteers have a louder voice on a world platform.
