Vietnam: Cat Meat Hub 1

A cat meat hub is where trucks of captured live cats are delivered. Cats are bought and sold here. They’re also slaughtered and cooked for human consumption. This cat meat hub supplies cat meat to surrounding cat meat restaurants in and around Hanoi.

The first video (below) shows hundreds of captured live cats being unloaded off the truck. You can see the workers tip the loaded iron cages off the truck onto the concrete ground.

As the cage smashes onto the concrete any cat’s legs or tails protruding through the iron are shattered in the moment of impact.

Cat’s scream in agony but no one cares. Cat meat workers are immune to desperate pleas from petrified and suffering animals. They just don’t care.

The cat slaughterhouse is located in Nam Dinh; two hours out of Hanoi.

Cat Traders

Cat traders buy and sell cats by weight. All the cats are weighed to work out how much money exchanges hands.

By this stage the cats are mostly silent. They’re in shock. Many are injured. Most are attempting to be invisible. But they cannot escape.

The video (below) shows cats crammed into sealed plastic crates. Sometimes these crates are used to sell live cats onto other cat traders, for cat meat restaurants.

Signature Move

However, sealed plastic crates are also used to slaughter mass numbers of cats. Filled with cats, the loaded crates are submerged into water. Sometimes the crate will be hoisted up out of the water, as frantic cats thrash violently gasping for air – trying desperately to live.

After a minute or two the same loaded crate is re-submerged into the water – until the thrashing stops.

This is a signature move in Vietnam’s cat meat trade. It’s known as double drowning. Cat butchers use many different methods to slaughter cats. But for mass numbers of cats, drowning is the preferred method.

The cat meat trade is equally as bad for cats as it is dog dogs in the dog meat trade. Cats are mostly solitary animals and being forcibly crammed on top of each other is horrific for cats. Stress can be deadly for cats. The cat meat trade heaps towering levels of stress onto cats.

Cats are the forgotten victims of the trade.

But not forgotten by us. Fight Dog Meat will continue to expose the brutal cat meat trade. This is the first of a series of articles on Vietnam’s cat meat trade.

In Conclusion:

Fight Dog Meat will continue our rescue, rehabilitation and adoption work, helping Vietnam’s animals in critical need. Turning away or sitting quietly does not end the hideous meat trade. FDM will keep exposing what these animals are forced to endure. We’re helping local volunteers have a louder voice on a world platform. Ultimately it’s the voice of the country’s own people whom their government will eventually be forced to listen to, for positive change for animals.
