Many dog meat and cat meat restaurants across Vietnam slaughter dogs and cats inside their restaurant. This allows the butchers to collect the blood in bowls, for cooking meals in their restaurants. Congealed blood pudding is a gruesome mixture of congealed blood, spices and nuts on top. The pudding can be made with any type of blood, but in Vietnam it’s often dog or cat blood.

Blood for congealed blood pudding is collected when the dog or cat has it’s throat cut and a bowl held strategically to catch the blood pumping out of the animal’s body with each heart beat. Warm congealed blood pudding is often served in small individual bowls.

The same butcher who slaughtered the cats in the photo above, also slaughters dogs for their restaurant. There are no animal protection laws in Vietnam and this is not illegal. The first step toward getting this trade shut down is for Vietnam to introduce animal protection laws. Then newly implemented laws would need to be upheld and enforced. Vietnam has a long way to go but we cannot give up trying. We must keep pushing forward. (We do not believe petitions are the answer to shutting down the trade in Vietnam. We do have our own FDM petitions but we do not push them for that reason.)

Fight Dog Meat will continue to bring you reports from dog and cat meat countries and the wonderful work their rescuers are doing despite no animal protection laws. Turning away or sitting quietly does not end the trade. We’ll keep exposing what is taking place to these animals. We’re helping local volunteers have a louder voice on a world platform. Ultimately it’s the voice of the country’s own people whom their government will eventually be forced to listen to, for positive change for animals.
