Congo: Ebola/Dog Meat

A deadly cycle of Ebola deaths in the African continent’s Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is fueled by eating dog meat. Local people perform burial rituals with their deceased loved ones, before burying them in the ground.
Roaming stray dogs dig up corpses and feast on deceased Ebola victims. This transmits Ebola to corpse eating dogs.

Ebola stays in a dog for approximately 14 days.
Ebola corpse eating dogs captured during the 14 day contagious period pass Ebola to people slaughtering, butchering and eating Ebola infected dogs. And so the cycle continues.

It is imperative people stop eating dog meat.
But warnings fall on deaf ears.

Not eating dog meat would save so many lives. It would allow health organizations to get a grip of Ebola outbreaks.
But for some reason eating dog meat is more important.
African countries hold many superstitions and customs which many local people refuse to alter.

May 27th, 2026 Ebola World News Reports:
More than 1200 cases and 250 deaths (suspected and confirmed) since early May. Cases doubled in a week.

Over the years not all deaths could be included in published numbers of Ebola throughout previous outbreaks. In Liberia for example many people were too ill to make it to hospitals and died at home or on roads. Some people refused to accept the illness was Ebola and only sort medical help from local healers (not medical doctors), with devastating results.

World Health authorities are working hard to harness the illness as best they can. Its incredibly difficult when faced with disbelief and refusal of help.

NOTE:
Cats do not contract Ebola at all.

Years ago Fight Dog Meat used to write a lot about the continent of Africa and its extensive dog and cat meat trade. We were in direct contact with African people living in Africa.

These days we focus on Vietnam but still pay close attention to the effects of dog and cat meat consumption throughout the world.
